The Best Mixtapes of 2009

1. Drake – So Far Gone

When a comparatively bad retail-version of your CD sells 73,000 copies in the first week, while a very good mixtape-version is available online for free, your album is #1 in my book. Also, props for songs featuring Sweden’s Lykke Li and Peter Bjorn & John. Everyone better already have at least some version of this mixtape in their library, and get ready for ‘Thank Me Later‘ in 2010.

[Featured artists: Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Bun B, Omarion, Lloyd, Lykke Li, Santogold & Peter Bjorn & John]

2. Wiz Khalifa – Flight School

I still listen to this CD pretty regularly. ‘Flight School’ showcases Wiz better than any of his other CD’s in 2009 by far.

[Featured artists: Kev Da Hustla & John Record]

3. Kid Cudi – Dat Kid From Cleveland

Kid Cudi had a big year, and this is his best mixtape effort for 2009.

[Featured artists: Kanye West, Common, Wale, Chip Tha Ripper, Consequence, Kevin Rudolf, Jackie Chain, 88-Keys & Sharam]

4. Big Sean – UKnowBigSean Vol. 2

I really wish Big Sean would release another mixtape, but this one will have to satisfy until that happens. This tape is solid throughout.

[Featured artists: Mike Posner, Santigold, Jay K, Earlly MacMillion, Dusty McFly, Keely & Pat Piff]

5. Lil Wayne – No Ceilings

Lil Wayne proves he is still ridiculously creative and has unlimited punch lines… gives me flashbacks to his mixtape haydays a few years ago.

[Featured artists: Birdman, Tyga, Jae Millz, Gudda Gudda, Nicki Minaj, Short Dawg, Shanell & Lucci Lou]

6. The Cool Kids – Gone Fishing

The Cool Kids drop another solid mixtape. I wish these guys came out with more music overall, but you can’t knock their consistent quality.

[Featured artists: Ryan Leslie, Shorty K, Jahda & Tennille]

7. Gucci Mane – Gucci Land

Gucci is the most popular rapper right now; I can see ‘The State vs. Radric Davis‘ selling between 250K & 500K this week… it’s a good CD. I had this mixtape, ‘Gucci Land’, on replay more than any of his others in the past year.

[Featured artists: OJ Da Juiceman, The Game, Timbaland, Fabolous, Nicki Minaj, Chip Tha Ripper, Dem Franchise Boyz, Yung L.A., Gorilla Zoe, Shawty Lo, Freeky Zekey & more]

8. B.o.B. – B.o.B. vs. Bobby Ray

B.o.B./Bobby Ray/This guy is definitely one of the most talented of the new artists with his versatility rapping and producing.

[Featured artists: Kanye West, T.I., Charles Hamilton, Asher Roth, OJ Da Juiceman, Bun B, Mickey Factz, Big Kuntry, Mac Boney, Playboy Tre & Killa Mike]

9. Mike Posner – One Foot Out The Door

My only non-rap mixtape for the year, and it is Mike Posner for a reason. The songs featuring Big Sean are the highlights for me.

[Featured artists: Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Saigon, Bun B, Clinton Sparks, Freddie Gibbs, GLC & XV]

10. Wale – Back to the Feature

Another rapper that had a big year; this is Wale’s best overall mixtape effort in 2009.

[Featured artists: Big Sean, Talib Kweli, Mike Posner, Bun B, Joell Ortiz, Lady Gaga, Currensy, Memphis Bleek, Peter Bjorn & John, Young Chris, J Cole, Royce Da 5’9, Joe Budden & more]

11. Tyga – The Free Album

Yeah, I couldn’t narrow my list to 10 selections, and I even had a hard time deciding between this mixtape and Tyga’s more recent, ‘The Potential‘.

[Featured artists: Lil Wayne, Gata & Short Dawg]

The Rich Family

In no relation to Rich Boy or RichGirl, Rich Kids are the newest generation of riches. Seriously though, they’re endorsed by Bankhead with T.I., Young Dro & Yung L.A. Their single ‘Patna Dem‘ came out about 6 months ago, I think – the remix with Ludacris and Lil Scrappy is legit too:

money_swag Rich Kids – Money Swag

My fav tracks:

Rich Kids feat. Cooley – Starbust

Rich Kids – All In My Video

“69 is what we do, so she had to suck me up.” lol.

Rich Kids feat. Cooley & Brandon – Swaggn By Myself

Rich Kids feat. Cooley – Swag Worth A Million

“fresh to death but still alive.” lol.

Quick enliten update: the new site should be up within the next couple weeks. Our first line of shirts are going to be produced probably this week – the designs are pretty much all 100% finished.

I’m going up to Seattle tomorrow for a few days. I’ll be at the Seattle Sounders vs. Barcelona soccer game tomorrow night too.

Here is some new music to keep you entertained in the meantime; download them all for a nice little variety pack! There will be a lot of updates regarding enliten in the next few weeks, so be on the look out!

guccimanethemoviepart2cover-thumbGucci Mane – The Movie 2: The Sequel

My fav tracks:

Gucci Mane feat. Trey Songz – Beat It Up

Gucci Mane – Leading Lady

Gucci Mane feat. Woo Da Kid – Pressure

I would suggest you go out and buy Fabolous’ new CD – Loso’s Way. I’m a lil scared to post whole retail CD, so sorry about that. Pretty much every song is legit. I already posted ‘Salute’ with Lil Wayne. Here is a track with Jay-Z:

Fabolous feat. Jay-Z – Money Goes, Honey Stay (When The Money Goes)

Gucci Mane feat. OJ Da Juiceman – Wasted (remix)

Drake – The Winner

Drake feat. Saukrates – The Search

JD Era feat. Drake – Black Magic

Soulja Boy – Stick Em Up

Lil Kim feat. The Dream & Soulja Boy – Download (remix)

Soulja Boy – Outer Space Flow

Clipse feat. Pharrell & Keri Hilson – Eyes On Me

Shanell feat. Lil Wayne – Play In My Band

Mase – Shut The City Down

Ace Hood – On My Grind

Yung L.A. – Off Set

New Boyz feat. Ray J – Tie Me Down

Lil Boosie feat. Bobby Valentino – Nobody

Charles Hamilton – All Alone

Cassidy – OK, You’re Right Freestyle

I would also recommend Slaughterhouse’s new CD. Here is one of my favorite tracks:

Slaughterhouse – Cut You Loose

Elroy Jetson

Here is Yung L.A.’s new single and video (mp3 link is below the vid). The song has been out for a couple months now, and it’s pretty decent. I was a little confused at first about what “Elroy” meant… Apparently, it has to do with Elroy Jetson – makes sense because the song is called Futuristic Love. Anyways, Elroy always had tons of cool gadgets and stuff on the show… kinda a weird reference. But check it out anyways:

Yung L.A. feat. Ricco Barrino – Futuristic Love

By the way, I’m currently the #1 Yung L.A. listener on Last.fm. Check this pic out. It shows me on the bottom where it says “Top listeners on Last.fm”. Prettttty tight. haha.

I Think I Can Sing-les

Download all these songs:

Mike Posner feat. Saigon – Kiss Me Thru The Phone (remix)

Interesting combo to remix Soulja Boy…

Lil Twist feat. Mack Maine & Lil Wayne – Let’s Chill

Lil Twist – She Fight My Love

Couple new tracks from Twist. Hottest young rapper?

F.L.Y. (Fast Life Yungstaz) feat. Stuey Rock – Gotta Be

From those “Swag Surfin’” boys.

Tyga – Cut My Check

My fav track of Tyga’s new tape. Produced by Bangladesh.

Hurricane Chris & Lil Boosie – Doin Our Thang

I kinda think Chris and Boosie sound alike… Good song tho.

Rich Hil feat. Kid Cudi – Girls, Sounds & Colors

Kid Cudi – Mr. Solo Dolo

Not really sure who Rich Hil is, but Cudi is always quality.

Cory Gunz – Like U Don’t Know

Don’t sleep on this song… or Cory Gunz in general. This song is fire. Check out Cory Gunz on the Youngest In Charge mixtape. It’s prettttty good.

Dorrough – Walk That Walk

From the “Ice Cream Paint Job” guy.

Lil Wayne feat. Gucci Mane – We Be Steady Mobbin

Gucci and Wayne… Download now.

Yung L.A. feat. Young Dro – Everything White

Yung L.A. – I Thank I Can Sang

What’s with rappers talking about being white recently? Gucci and Plies talking about getting “Wasted” like white boys… Yung L.A. talking about being Steve Nash in this song and now again in “Everything White”.

Soulja Boy – Gangsta Grillz: Follow Me Edition (mixtape)

[Featured Artists: Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman & JBAR]

I would say worth the download just to get the “Go Ham” mp3. haha. Seriously tho, not a bad tape. DJ Drama strikes again.

It is true that Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Drake and Soulja Boy are going on tour this July? Idk but here’s a video with Soulja Boy, Drake, Bow Wow, Willie and Trey hanging out playing Xbox haha:

Kinda weird song. Sounds like Andre Nickatina?:

Kid Cudi – Heaven At Nite

Mickey Factz feat. Kid Cudi – Do My Do

Yung L.A. holdin it down while T.I. is on vacation. First couple are from the Drama mixtape & the last L.A. song is produced by Jim Jonsin:

Yung L.A. – Pass Da Rock

Yung L.A. feat. Mitchellel – Step Outside

Yung L.A. – Taser Gun

Official version, I think:

Drake feat. Lil Wayne & Young Jeezy – I’m Going In

First one reminds me of Wayne’s flow a few years back:

Lil Wayne – Kobe Bryant

Playaz Circle feat. Young Jeezy & Lil Wayne – Stupid (remix)

Gucci Mane feat. OJ Da Juiceman – Mo Money

Big Sean feat. Kanye West – Glenwood
